Notes

  • Make use of high-quality Hojicha powder to make Hojicha Latte as it dissolves easily into the water and gives you a flavourful taste that is not bitter.
  • You can use milk of your choice, such as almond milk, soy milk, oats milk and more. I prefer using whole milk or thicker milk to make it more creamier.
  • You can use any sweetener of your choice, such as honey, maple syrup, agave syrup, etc. Or just add brown sugar to the Hojicha Latte.
  • To garnish, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon powder on top of the Hojicha Latte. You can even add whipped cream on top of it!
  • If you like, add vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract to your latte.
  • You can adjust the ratio of Hojicha powder and water according to your taste preferences.
  • You can even use a milk frother or electric whisk to foam up the tea if it’s difficult for you to foam it up using a bamboo whisk.

Shelf Life

I suggest you drink your Hojicha Latte immediately after it is served because it’s best to enjoy its flavours right away. But if you would still prefer it to store, then you must add it to an airtight container, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours.

FAQ

What Does Hojicha Taste Like?

Hojicha has a similar taste to a strong tea or coffee, just with zero bitterness. It has a slightly earthy, nutty, sweet & smokey taste. Hojicha is on the milder side and has a hint of caramelized flavour.

Does Hojicha Contain Caffeine?

As we know, Hojicha is a type of green tea, and therefore, it does contain caffeine. However, the tea roasting process to bring out its main flavour tends to reduce the amount of caffeine. It is low in caffeine, and 1 cup of Hojicha contains about 7mg of caffeine, which seems to be fine.

What Type Of Hojicha Is Best For Making Lattes?

I usually prefer using Hojicha powder, which is also known as “ground Hojicha” or the “matcha style”. It perfectly brews, similar to a matcha tea, and gives out all the antioxidants into the cup. But loose-leaf Hojicha te can also be used to make this beverage. You just need to add water over 2 tsp of loose-leaf Hojicha tea and allow it to steep for 4 – 5 minutes. Strain, and it’s ready to enjoy!
